Astrophytum – Appearance and Care

Appearance:

Astrophytum is a unique and highly prized genus of cacti known for their geometric shapes and distinctive patterns. Their name means “star plant,” which reflects their ribbed, star-like form when viewed from above. The bodies range from round to columnar and are often covered in white speckles or dots that give a dusted, ornamental appearance. Many species are spineless or have minimal spines. They produce large, silky flowers in shades of bright yellow, often with orange or red centers, adding to their appeal.

Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. Strong light keeps their shape compact.

  • Water: Water moderately in spring and summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep dry in winter.

  • Soil: Requires very well-draining cactus mix with mineral content like sand or pumice.

  • Temperature: Enjoys warmth but protect from frost. Ideal range is 10–35°C.

  • Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season with cactus fertilizer.
