Thelocactus – Appearance and Care
Appearance:
Thelocactus is a genus of small to medium-sized globular cacti native to Mexico, celebrated for their distinctive ribbed bodies and impressive spines. Most species form a rounded or slightly flattened shape with pronounced ribs lined with strong, often hooked or straight spines. During the growing season, they produce large, funnel-shaped flowers in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, or red, often with a contrasting throat, creating a dramatic display. Thelocactus are slow-growing, architectural cacti that make striking additions to any collection.
Care:
-
Light: Prefers full sun to very bright light. Proper light ensures compact growth and encourages flowering.
-
Water: Water moderately during spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep mostly dry during winter dormancy.
-
Soil: Requires very well-draining cactus soil, often with added sand, pumice, or grit to prevent waterlogging.
-
Temperature: Enjoys warm conditions but must be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–35°C.
-
Feeding: Light fertilization during the growing season with cactus fertilizer supports healthy growth and flowering.
-
Maintenance: Slow-growing, hardy if well-drained, and perfect for collectors. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
