Ferocactus – Appearance and Care

Appearance:

Ferocactus is a bold and powerful genus of barrel cacti known for their thick ribs and dramatic, heavy spines. Their name means “fierce cactus,” and they live up to it with strong hooks and striking colors ranging from red and yellow to creamy white. Most grow into round barrel shapes and can become large with age. In season, they produce beautiful crown flowers in bright yellow, orange, red, or pink. Their tough appearance and architectural form make them true statement plants.

Care:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun. More sun brings stronger spines and better shape.

  • Water: Water well in spring and summer, then allow soil to dry completely. Keep dry in winter.

  • Soil: Needs very well-draining cactus soil.

  • Temperature: Loves heat and handles high temperatures well. Protect from frost.

  • Feeding: Feed lightly in the growing season with cactus fertilizer.

  • Maintenance: Very hardy and long-lived, perfect for pots or dry gardens.

Ferocactus are classic collector plants — tough, beautiful, and built to impress.
