Lophophora williamsii – Appearance and Care

Appearance:

Lophophora williamsii, commonly known as Peyote, is a small, slow-growing, spineless cactus with a soft, button-like shape. Its body is blue-green to grey-green, divided into rounded ribs with small woolly tufts instead of spines. Mature plants produce delicate, silky flowers in shades of soft pink or white, followed by small pink fruit. Its symmetrical form and unique texture make it highly prized by collectors.

Care:

  • Light: Prefers bright light to gentle full sun. Protect from extreme, scorching sun.

  • Water: Water sparingly in spring and summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep dry in winter dormancy.

  • Soil: Requires very well-draining cactus soil with added mineral content like sand or pumice.

  • Temperature: Enjoys warmth but must be protected from frost. Ideal range is 10–35°C
