Notocactus (Parodia) – Appearance and Care
Description:
Notocactus, now mostly classified under the genus Parodia, is a group of small to medium-sized cacti native to South America. They are known for their rounded to short cylindrical shapes, neat ribs, and fine to prominent spines. Many species develop beautiful body colors ranging from fresh green to bluish or purple tones. Their most celebrated feature is their large, silky flowers, often in bright yellow, orange, red, or pink, which appear on the crown and can be surprisingly large compared to the plant.
General Care:
-
Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. Good light encourages compact growth and flowering.
-
Water: Water regularly in spring and summer, but allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Keep dry during winter dormancy.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix with good mineral content.
-
Temperature: Enjoys warm conditions but protect from frost. Most prefer 5–30°C.
-
Feeding: Fertilize lightly during the growing season with cactus fertilizer.
-
Maintenance: Easy and rewarding, ideal for beginners and collectors alike.
Notocactus (Parodia) are loved for their manageable size, colourful flowers, and dependable nature, making them essential additions to any cactus collection.
